Hunting for food can be a bit time consuming, but it is a worthwhile skill to learn if the player wants to explore the map or avoid the more populated areas. Just as important as food is thirst. Thirst goes down naturally over time like hunger, but it can do down even faster if the player recently got into a fight. Items that can alleviate thirst include Nota Cola, Spite Lemonade, and other sodas. But the best thing to drink above all else is clean water. As such, beginner players are highly recommended to seek out wells at every town they visit.
Since wells always provide an unlimited source of clean water, this makes them invaluable when it comes to survival. Alternatively, the player can make their own clean water. If the player has a canteen or water bottle, they can collect liquid from a water source like lakes or rivers. If the player drinks straight from this unclean water source they may get cholera, but players can purify the water by either using purification tablets or boiling the water over a campfire.
Naturally, players will be taking damage. Either from other survivors, zombies, or when the player is dehydrated or starving. The rate at which health is lost is determined by how often they get hit and the type of injury they receive. Instead, health naturally recovers on its own over time. Because of this, players are recommended to have a source of water on hand at any given time. Players are also recommended to seek out the nearest well if they are close to or inside a town.
The further inland the player goes, the better the loot gets. Naturally, these inland areas are often filled with its own dangers. This usually takes the form of tougher zombies or roaming bands of experienced players. This makes going inland a high-risk high-reward situation. So beginner players are actually encouraged to take their time in the starting area in order to prepare. If players really want to get out the starting area as soon as possible then at the very least they should collect a backpack, a knife, a gun, food, and water before they head out.
If you're right on the coast check around boats before heading inland to check houses. If it's really hard to find it's likely because someone else got to it first - you always start with an item of food but if you haven't found any more before that runs out you should think about restarting. As we'll mention a few more of times in upcoming tips, it's easy to spawn not long after someone else who clears out areas ahead of you and not finding any food should be a warning.
Everyone starts off with some sort of fruit which gives you some space as far as eating goes. That leaves water and weaponry as your main worry. Check sheds, garages and warehouses - anywhere that looks like it might have a tool to find a hatchet, pipe or something like that, while bats can be found in houses. In a pinch, anything you can hold can be used as a weapon and cans are surprisingly effective.
But range is you friend when it comes to smacking the undead. Sprinting is one of the worst things for draining your food levels so, as much as you want to, try to avoid that too much. Short answer: houses and garages in the early stages of the game. Tents are another good option if you head into the woods. Sometimes zombies can be wearing a backpack too so keep an eye out.
Whichever you choose, the odds are stacked mercilessly against you. When you start a new life, you spawn randomly along the coast of Chernarus. All you have to survive is a flashlight and a battery. Your first port of call should be a town. When you get there you need to prioritise food, drink, a backpack, and a melee weapon. Forget about crowbars, fire extinguishers, and other blunt weapons, as they do very little damage. Find an axe — either a red firefighter axe, or a wood-handled splitting axe.
If you enter a town and all the doors are open, chances are the place has already been cleaned out by other survivors. Then get everyone to locate the nearest town to where they spawned and find out its name. Since everyone will have spawned on the coast, you can now use the water to guide you towards your buddies.
If your spawn has placed you miles apart, commit suicide by throwing yourself off a building and hope for a better one. At night, as in real life, you can use the pole star to find out where north is. To use it, drag it to your toolbar, equip it, then press space and enter first-person mode to see the dial.
Keeping fed and hydrated is an important part of staying alive in DayZ. Same goes for your hunger.
